In effort to remediate and transform the Anacostia into a fishable and swimmable river, in 2014 the District launched a long-term project to address its contaminated sediments. The Anacostia River Sediment Project (ARSP) is the most comprehensive approach to restoring the river in its history and the District tasked its Department of Energy and the Environment (DOEE) to lead the cleanup efforts. Given the complexity of this undertaking, the Leadership Council for a Cleaner Anacostia River (LCCAR) was formed to help to ensure that the project receives the guidance and support it needs to succeed. The LCCAR meets quarterly to discuss ARSP progress and challenges.
